Gastroschisis Surgery in Nagpur

Understanding Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis is a birth defect where an infant’s intestines are found outside of the body, exiting through a hole next to the belly button. Unlike other similar conditions, there is no membrane or sac covering the exposed organs. This condition is usually detected during a prenatal ultrasound, allowing doctors and parents to prepare for immediate intervention after birth. The definitive treatment for gastroschisis is surgery, a critical procedure performed by a Neonatal Surgeon or Best Pediatric Surgeon soon after delivery.

The Gastroschisis Surgery Process

The goal of Gastroschisis surgery is to safely place the exposed intestines back into the abdominal cavity and close the defect in the abdominal wall. The specific surgical approach depends on the amount of intestine outside the body and the size of the baby’s abdomen.

  • Immediate Post-Birth Care: After delivery, the exposed intestines are carefully placed in a sterile, protective bag to prevent infection and fluid loss.
  • Surgical Repair: The Pediatric Surgeon assesses the situation. If the abdomen is large enough, the intestines are gently pushed back inside, and the opening is closed. This is called a primary repair.
  • Staged Repair: In cases where the intestines are too swollen to fit back into the abdomen in one go, a staged repair is performed. The surgeon places the intestines in a silo, a pouch that is gradually tightened over several days, slowly easing the organs back into the abdominal cavity. Once all the intestines are inside, the Child Specialist Surgeon closes the opening.
  • Post-Operative Care: The baby will remain in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while their digestive system begins to function.
Broader Expertise of a Pediatric Surgeon

A Pediatric Surgeon‘s role extends far beyond gastroschisis. They are specialists trained to handle a diverse range of surgical conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents. Their expertise covers various fields, including:

  • Neonatal and General Procedures: They perform critical surgeries for conditions such as Pyloric stenosis surgery, Hirschsprung’s disease surgery, Anorectal malformations surgery, and Neonatal Omphalocele repair. They also address common issues like Pediatric Hernias Treatment and pediatric appendix Treatment.
  • Urological Conditions: A Pediatric Urologist handles conditions like Hydrocele treatment in children, Undescended testes surgery, Hypospadias surgery in children, and Pediatric kidney stone removal.
  • Advanced Surgical Techniques: Many pediatric surgeries are now performed using minimally invasive techniques. A Pediatric Laparoscopic Surgeon or Pediatric Thoracoscopic Surgeon uses small incisions to perform procedures. A Pediatric Robotic Surgeon can use robots for enhanced precision, particularly for complex procedures like Robotic pyeloplasty in children.
  • Other Specialized Surgeries: The scope of Pediatric Surgery also includes surgeries for tumors like Wilms tumor surgery, Neuroblastoma surgery in children, and Teratoma removal in children, as well as complex gastrointestinal and liver procedures like Pediatric fundoplication for GERD and Pediatric Liver surgeries.
